Green turtle caught in Piran Bay, Slovenia

As a result of our collaboration with fishermen, working on assessing the effectiveness of modified fishing gear for sea turtle bycatch reduction, one of our researchers was informed that on 17th October 2017, an unusual looking sea turtle was caught 6-7 nautical miles off Savudrija. By examining the provided image, we were able to identify the turtle as Chelonia mydas, the green turtle. On account of the fisherman, the animal was brought up dead entangled in one of the gillnets targeting commercial shark species. This is an unusual observation, as most green turtles in the Adriatic Sea can be found in its southernmost part.
