Success of the project on Cyprus

Cyprus Marine Turtle Nesting 2017-2020

Prior to the commencement of the LIFE Euroturtles project and specifically during 2017 nesting season, 973 nests were monitored and protected on the beaches that were considered for the project.

During the 2018 nesting season, 1188 nests were monitored on the beaches considered for the LIFE Euroturtles Project. A total of 286 nests were protected against predators with aluminium cages provided by Life Euroturtles (24% of all monitored nests) while 813 nests (68% of all monitored nests) were protected using previously constructed aluminium cages of the DFMR (Cyprus Turtle Conservation Project). The hatching success (measured as % of nests that hatched) for the nests protected by cages provided by LIFE Euroturtles was high for all beaches, ranging from 71% (North Lara Bay and South Lara Bay) to 100% (Natura Beach).

During the 2019 nesting season, 725 nests were monitored on the beaches considered for the LIFE Euroturtles Project. A total of 255 nests were protected against predators with aluminium cages provided by Life Euroturtles (35% of all monitored nests) while 459 nests (63% of all monitored nests) were protected using previously constructed aluminium cages of the DFMR (Cyprus Turtle Conservation Project). The hatching success (measured as % of nests that hatched) for the nests protected by cages provided by LIFE Euroturtles was high for all beaches, ranging from 79% (North Lara Bay) to 100% (Natura Beach).
